Amigos de Milord

Rupert Shaldrake

There are dogs who, by some means, find their master's grave and then stay by it, like Greyfriar Bobby, the famous faithful dog from Edinburgh. Others visit it regularly, but then return home, if there is still a home to which they can return.

My husband suffered a massive stroke in 1988 and died in the hospital after spending two weeks there. After his burial behind the church near his home, Joe, the dog, disappeared for a few hours, and later we discovered that he was sitting alongside my husband's grave. How did he know when my husband had died and where he was buried?

(Molly Parfertt, Wadebridge, Cornwall)

These stories of strong devotion illustrate how extreme the solid bond can be between dogs and their masters, and at the same they time reinforce their ancient reputation of loyalty.
